Pottery of Avanos
Place:Avanos, Nevşehir
A pottery tradition stretching back to the Hittites, shaped on foot-powered wheels from the red clay of the Kızılırmak.
Pottery in Avanos begins with sifting and kneading the soft red clay gathered from the beds of the Kızılırmak River. Masters raise jugs and vessels on foot-driven wheels.
Once dried and fired in kilns, these vessels become enduring fixtures of Anatolian households.
